Twitter users in Europe will have protected data, but in the US it's the same old free-for-all

Twitter made a small but significant update to its terms of service and privacy policy on Friday, noting that all users outside the U.S. will have their account information processed at Twitter's subsidiary in Ireland starting next month


Until now, all data for Twitter users had been handled out of the U.S., where the company is based


Twitter's move comes as the European Union readies an extensive update to its data privacy laws, which are spelled out in the European Data Protection Directive. The new laws, which will require companies to notify users of how their data is being used and distributed, will likely change the way tech companies, including Facebook, Google and Twitter, handle information.
