Islamic State (ISIS) militants reportedly entered the embattled refugee camp of Yarmouk in southern Damascus on Wednesday, according to activists on the ground.
The camp for Palestinian refugees is still home to thousands of civilians who have long been caught in the crossfire of the Syrian civil war
If ISIS does take control of the area it would be the closest the extremist group have come to the Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's seat of power in the capital city of Damascus.
The militant extremist group, which holds a strong grip on territory in northern Iraq and northern and eastern Syria, are believed to have entered the camp from the nearby Hajar Aswad neighborhood in southern Damascus.
